DOST provides guidebook for aspiring DOST scholars

DUMAGUETE CITY, Negros Oriental (PIA) -- Senior high school students may soon be getting better advice from their schools on which path to take as future researchers, scientists, and engineers.

This after the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) here turned over several copies of “Finding North in STEM: A Career Guidebook for Students,” to seven Department of Education (DepEd) division offices in Negros Oriental.

The guidebook for students is a publication of the DOST–Science Education Institute (SEI) that aims to paint a clearer picture of the many opportunities available in the field.

The DOST distributed the guidebooks after a Kapihan sa PIA forum on DOST undergraduate scholarships hosted by the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) in Dumaguete City.

The event was attended by education program supervisors and school principals from the different DepEd division offices in the province.

DepEd Negros Oriental Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Neri C. Ojastro, in his message, emphasized how scientific and technological advancements influence changes in educational programs and helped developed the critical thinking skills of students.

Featuring a variety of career specializations that go beyond the popular fields, the guidebook aims to develop a culture of science and technology among the youth, promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) education, and popularize careers that are unfamiliar to many.

It specifically highlights STEM courses that are covered by the DOST-SEI scholarship programs for both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

The Kapihan sa PIA tackled the opening of the 2024 DOST-SEI Undergraduate Scholarships for Grade 12 students.

DOST Provincial Director Atty. Gilbert Arbon urged senior high school students to avail of the DOST Scholarship as it provides financial aid and valuable opportunities in the fields of science and technology.

DOST Science Research Specialist Marjorie Solon said the 2024 DOST’s Science Education Institute (SEI) Undergraduate Science and Technology Scholarships Program as well as the admission process are now open.

Solon said undergraduate scholars will receive financial assistance of P40,000 per academic year to cover tuition and other school fees, a P7,000 monthly stipend, a P1,000 clothing allowance, a P10,000 learning materials and/or connectivity allowance, a transportation allowance (for those studying outside of their home province), a premium group accident and health insurance, a P10,000 thesis allowance, and a P1,000 graduation allowance.

Applications are open to students in the STEM strand, but non-STEM students may also apply, provided they belong to the top 5% of their graduating class.

Eligible Grade 12 students can now apply online through https://www.science-scholarships.ph/ until December 31, 2023.

DOST is also offering scholarships for graduate students in priority fields in science and technology, namely: Accelerated Science and Technology Human Resource Development Program, Capacity Building Program in Science and Mathematics Education, Engineering Research and Development for Technology, Foreign Graduate Scholarship Program, UAlberta S&T Graduate Scholarship Program, PhilFrance DOST Fellowship Program, Science and Technology Regional Alliance of Universities for National Development.
