Nourishment for children starts during pregnancy

  DUMAGUETE CITY, Negros Oriental, Dec. 1 (PIA) -- Parents are reminded about the importance of providing nutritional interventions at the start of a mother’s pregnancy to ensure the physical development of their children. Integrated Provincial Health Office (IPHO) Nutritionist Antonieta Delfino said that a child’s health and wellness starts at conception. This is why it is important for pregnant women to undergo prenatal check-up at least four times during her term, said Delfino. Upon their birth, babies should undergo newborn screening tests within 24 hours to detect if the child has congenital, metabolic, and other genetic disorders that need immediate treatment. Delfino added that breast milk is the best food for babies as it carries essential nutrients for child development like colostrum. Tagbilaran City gives in to people’s clamor; scraps reclamation project

  TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol (PIA) -- The voice of the people prevailed in the controversial proposal to reclaim certain parts of the capital city’s coastline as Tagbilaran City Mayor Jane C. Yap shut down the plan to reclaim 153 hectares of land parallel to the city’s coastlines.  The City Council  of Tagbilaran City tackled the Tagbilaran City Waterfront Development Project, which involves the reclamation of 153 hectares of land along the shorelines of Booy to Mansasa districts.  The reclamation project covers seagrass beds and reef areas and imperils the protected Mabaw Reef.  The project hopes to gain more prime real estate properties and increase local revenues.  The City Council has started discussing the city government’s proposed Public and Private Partnership (PPP) ordinance, which was also patterned after the country’s laws and the Philippine Reclamation Authority’s guidelines, which will govern the proposed reclamation project.  The city council started to tackle the proposal bu

Live hog farm gate prices in Bohol down in last 3 months

  CORTES, Bohol, Nov. 18 (PIA) -- Farm gate prices for live hogs in Bohol decreased by P10 in November this year compared to the prices monitored in June this year. According to the consolidated data shared by the municipal agriculture office price monitoring teams across Bohol, as of Nov. 10, 2023, or three months after an outbreak of the dreaded African Swine Fever (ASF), commercial farms have lowered their price by P10 every 10 kilo weight classification for live hogs bought from their farms. For example, for 61 kilos to 70 kilos of live hog, the current price is at P233 per kilo, which means a 61-kilo live hog could cost around P14,213. This is already a big decline from the June 23, 2023 price monitoring report, which showed that the same weight category costs P243 a kilo.  On June 23, 2023, the farm gate prices for live hogs are as follows: 71-80 kilos at P226; 81-90 kilos at P208; 91-100 kilos at P190; 101-110 kilos at P186; 111-120 kilos at P182; 121-130 kilos at P178; and 131-

Out-of-school youth to benefit from opening of shipyard in Bohol

  TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol (PIA) -- Out-of-school youth and young men whose hopes of a good life have been dashed by poverty will soon be donning hard hats, safety shoes, and thick gloves.  This comes after Artemis Marine Industrial Construction Inc. (AMICI) opened its first two hectares of shipyard in Brgy. Agrarian reform beneficiaries laud PBBM’s condonation program

  SIQUIJOR, Dec. 1 (PIA) -- Eighteen agrarian reform beneficiaries (ARBs) in Siquijor benefit from the New Agrarian Emancipation Act or Republic Act 11953, which aims to write off farmers’ debts and award them land titles.  The ARBs are tilling 20 lots in the towns of Maria, Larena, and Siquijor.   DUMAGUETE CITY, Negros Oriental (PIA) -- Jamaica Palama’s variety store in Malo, Siaton town was razed by a fire in January this year. The fire started at the back of the stall she was renting for her variety store. The flame eventually engulfed the surrounding structures within the vicinity. Paloma pegged the amount of the damages caused by the fire incident at P500,000. It did not only destroy the items she sold in her store but also burnt her appliances, including freezers and refrigerators. Months later, Palama was able to find new ways to earn money. She said her family was able to own a small fishing boat and they turned to fishing as their main source of livelihood. Helping micro entrepreneurs rebuild their business Like Palama, 22 other micro entrepreneurs in Negros Oriental also lost their businesses due to fire incidents last year and early this year. DOST provides guidebook for aspiring DOST scholars

  DUMAGUETE CITY, Negros Oriental (PIA) -- Senior high school students may soon be getting better advice from their schools on which path to take as future researchers, scientists, and engineers.  This after the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) here turned over several copies of “Finding North in STEM: A Career Guidebook for Students,” to seven Department of Education (DepEd) division offices in Negros Oriental. The guidebook for students is a publication of the DOST–Science Education Institute (SEI) that aims to paint a clearer picture of the many opportunities available in the field. The DOST distributed the guidebooks after a Kapihan sa PIA forum on DOST undergraduate scholarships hosted by the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) in Dumaguete City.  The event was attended by education program supervisors and school principals from the different DepEd division offices in the province.
