DUMAGUETE CITY, Negros Oriental, Aug. 16 (PIA) -- In line with the observance of National Family Planning Month this August, health officials from the Integrated Provincial Health Office (IPHO) conducted Bilateral Tubal Ligation (BTL) procedures for 85 clients in public hospitals in the province.
IPHO Family Planning Coordinator Sarah Maputi said BTL operations were done last week at Bayawan District Hospital and at Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital (NOPH) where medical officers catered to walk-in clients who wanted to avail of the said service.
The BTL operations were the joint undertaking between the IPHO, Commission on Population and Development (CPD-7), the Department of Health (DOH-7) and their partner private foundation to bolster the campaign on the value of family planning interventions to safeguard the health and overall well-being of family members.
Maputi also announced that NOPH is now capable of providing immediate BTL services, unlike before when it was an elective procedure.
“We have already a trained doctor who is Dr. Emerald Bulado. Anytime you can schedule (an appointment) unlike before when it is still an elective procedure so it’s hard to schedule it in the OR (operating room). As of now, they can do it in the delivery room,” Maputi said in a Kapihan sa PIA forum here yesterday.
“Kung post-partum ka and you want to be ligated right there and then, ma-ligate ka dayon (If you have just given birth and you want to be ligated right there and then, we can immediately perform the procedure). That’s an advantage to us,” she added.
Maputi also continued to advocate for the use of family planning interventions to promote quality of life among members of the family.
The DOH has repeatedly campaigned for the benefits of family planning for couples and their children.
The department underscored that health risks associated with multiple pregnancies and childbirth can be avoided when there is family planning.
Couples who have agreed on their desired family size and practiced child spacing can avoid financial distress since having many children could also lead to money problems.
Parents can also provide the proper nutritional, educational, and emotional care and guidance to their kids because they can give their full attention to them.
Maputi also noted that many couples, especially married women in Negros Oriental, are now aware of the value of family planning.
She validated the results of the study conducted by the Philippine Statistics Authority, which cited that more married women in the province are using modern family planning interventions.
“At least now, (naa nay) more awareness sa mga family na dili na sila ganahan og daghan anak. That’s why ganahan na sila mo-acquire og method for family planning. Dili na sila ganahan og daghan anak because gastos na kuno, lisod na magpa-eskwela ng mga bata. At least ang awareness nila about family planning (naa na) ug ganahan na gud sila mo-acquire og family planning (interventions) (At least now, couples have decided not to have many children that’s why they want to avail family planning methods. They say they don’t want many children because they are thinking about the cost of raising a child especially when it comes to school. At least they are now aware of it and they now want to avail family planning interventions),” Maputi said.
In line with this, Maputi said health workers in Local Health Units are capable of orienting and providing couples with traditional and modern family planning interventions.
She urged couples to consult with health professionals about their preferred family planning intervention. (RAL/PIA7 Negros Oriental)
