CEBU CITY, Cebu, May 29 (PIA) -- Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte led the launching of the "PagbaBago: A Million Learners and Trees Campaign" in Cebu when she visited the province on May 27.
The program is a nationwide campaign and an initiative of the Office of the Vice President that aims to uphold the importance of basic education and promote good oral hygiene of the students.
Under this program, the OVP will also provide backpacks to one million students nationwide within six years, or until 2028.
During the "Pagbabago" campaign launch held at the Mandaue City Sports Complex, a total of 1,000 grade school students (500 Grade 1 and 500 Grade 4) from various public schools in Mandaue City were given "PagbaBago Bags" containing school supplies and dental kits.
In her message, the Vice President encouraged the students to focus on their studies, citing the importance of education as a way to overcome poverty and improve the lives of their families.
She also urged the parents to keep their children away from criminality and illegal drugs.
"Akong giawhag ang mga ginikanan nga ipalayo ninyo ang inyohang mga anak sa mga dautan. Unang-una na dinha ang kriminalidad. Ikaduha dinha ang druga tungod kay kaning duha makadaut sa kaugmaon sa mga anak ninyo ug makadaut pod og pamilya (I encourage our parents to keep their children away from criminality. Second is drugs, because these two can destroy the future of your children and can also destroy a family," said Duterte.
Meanwhile, Duterte also received seedlings from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, as one of the objectives of the "Pagbabago" campaign is to plant one million trees throughout the country in response to the call for environmental protection.
The vice president ended the said activity by interacting with the students, parents, and teachers before going to Liloan town to join Pres. Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for the launching of Pier 88. (RGC/PIA7 Cebu)
