DUMAGUETE CITY, Negros Oriental, Nov. 28 (PIA) -- Some 70 former scholars of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) - Negros Oriental who graduated this year received medals and certificates from the DOST for attaining Latin Honors in their final year in college.
Of the total, 10 graduated with Summa Cum Laude, 30 with Magna Cum Laude, and the remaining 30 with Cum Laude.
Fifty of them were graduates of Silliman University while 18 of them came from Negros Oriental State University (NORSU) Main Campus in Dumaguete City, and one each from NORSU Guilhulngan City and Foundation University.
DOST Provincial Director Atty. Gilbert Arbon said this is the department’s way of honoring scholars who have shown outstanding performance in their studies.
“Kami sa DOST, we are really proud to acknowledge tat honors you achieved. This is also the time we give due recognition to the parents. Your sons and daughters have stepped forward to be the scholars of DOST, to be iskolar ng bayan (scholars of the nation),” Arbon said.
He also added that their achievement would also leave a lasting impact on the implementation of the program.
Out of the DOST scholars who graduated from NORSU, seven obtained a degree on Bachelor of Science (BS) in Psychology, two on BS in Chemistry, three on BS Mathematics, another three on Bachelor on Secondary Education (BSED) Major in Mathematics, and one each on BSED Science, BS Geology, BS Computer Science, and BS Biology.
On the other hand, 38 of the former DOST scholars in Silliman University were graduates of BS Medical Technology, four were graduates of BS Bilogy, two were graduates of BS Chemistry, another two were graduates of BS Marine Biology, and one each for BS Computer Science, BS Civil Engineering, BS Physics, and BS Psychology.
Former scholars also thanked DOST for helping them in their studies.
“Being a DOST scholar for two years as been more than a blessing for me especially as a proud daughter of a single mother who is also a farmer. Maski mo-ingon ta na free ang education sa NORSU, dili ta kaingon na wala jud gastoon si mama (Even though we know that it’s free tuition in NORSU, my mom is not exempted from paying other miscellaneous fees),” said Angelance Grace Sarona from NORSU.
She finished her Bachelor of Science in Pyschology with Summa Cum Laude honors. She was a scholar under the DOST-Science Education Institute (SEI)’s Junior Level Science Scholarship (JLSS) Program.
On the other hand hand, Philip Bernard Obeso, a magna cum laude from Silliman University who graduated with a degree in BS in Medical Technology, said the scholarship has not only alleviated their financial burden but also fuelled their dream and opened the doors to boundless knowledge and innovation.
“I am deeply honored and humbled to express our heartfelt gratitude to DOST. The support by DOST transcends the realm of financial assistance. It is a catalyst for our aspirations, enabling us to pursue academic endeavors with unrivalled determination and focus,” he said.
Obseso was a scholar under DOST’s undergraduate scholarship program since his first year in college.
Meanwhile, Engr. Alexis Sumugat, the third placer in the 2023 October Licensure Examinations for Geodetic Engineer and a former DOST scholar, also attended the recognition ceremony.
“Strive well and always be excellent. Once you are a DOST scholar, you have to remember you are no longer standing for yourself but you also bring the community with you. Anything you achieve part pod na siya sa success sa community (Anything you achieve is also part of the success of the community),” Sumugat told the honorees.
DOST is still accepting applications for its 2024 Undergraduate Scholarship program.
Deadline for online application is on Dec. 31, 2023.
