DUMAGUETE CITY, Negros Oriental, Nov. 29 (PIA) -- The division offices of the Department of Education (DepEd) in Negros Oriental are supporting the promotion of academic and career opportunities under the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) track among senior high students (SHS) in public schools here.
This after the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) distributed copies of STEM Guide Books to representatives of DepEd Division Offices of Negros Oriental, Bais City, Bayawan City, Canlaon City, Dumaguete City, Guihulngan City, and Tanjay City on Nov. 17.
The publication entitled “Finding North in STEM: A Career Guidebook” was published by the DOST-Science Education Institute (SEI) to inform the youth, especially the Grade 12 students, on the possible courses to take in college related to the STEM track and the career paths they can pursue.
Dr. Neri Ojastro, schools division superintendent of DepEd Negros Oriental, cited how scientific and technological advancements influence changes in educational programs and helped develop the critical thinking skills of students.
“In science and technology, children are given more opportunity to hone these particular skills and competencies. This particular guidebook for students is very important to our learners. I hope this partnership with DOST makatabang namo sa pag-ugmad sa kinaiya,sa abilidad, ug sa gugma sa mga bata sa pagtuon (I hope this partnership with DOST will help in cultivating students' interest, ability, and passion for learning),” Dr. Ojastro said.
He emphasized that STEM education will contribute to the development of scientific, research-driven, and evidence-based solutions to societal problems which are vital in today’s time.
The STEM Career Guidebooks will be turned over to public secondary schools for wider dissemination.
DOST – Negros Oriental Science Research Specialist Marjorie Solon said the DOST is offering scholarships for students who are interested to become engineers, scientists, or scientific researchers.
DOST scholars in Negros Oriental are enrolled in various STEM courses at Negros Oriental State University (NORSU), Silliman University (SU), and St. Paul University Dumaguete (SPUD).
Currently, the DOST is accepting applications for the 2024 Undergraduate Scholarships, which will end on Dec. 31, 2023.
Solon urged aspiring DOST scholars to submit their application before the deadline.
Application forms and other documentary requirements must be submitted online through https://www.science-scholarships.ph/.
She added the online portal can only accommodate 20,000 registrations per day.
Applicants who experience difficulty in logging in to the system may visit DOST office in Daro, Dumaguete City and their office staff will assist in their online registration.
Those who are eligible to apply for the scholarship are Filipino Grade 12 SHS students belonging to the STEM Strand.
Students who do not belong to the STEM strand may still apply for scholarship as long as they are part of the top five percent of their total graduating class.
Part of the financial benefits include P40,000 per academic year to cover tuition and other school fees, a P7,000 monthly stipend, a P1,000 clothing allowance, a P10,000 learning materials and/or connectivity allowance, a transportation allowance (for those studying outside of their home province), a premium group accident and health insurance, a P10,000 thesis allowance, and a P1,000 graduation allowance.
Solon said the DOST Negros Oriental Provincial Office is also planning to hold review sessions this year to help aspiring scholars prepare for the qualifying examinations.
“For this year we are still planning. We also accumulated review materials nad references we are giving to our applicants for them to study for the upcoming qualifying exam,” Solon said. (RAL/PIA7-Negros Oriental)
