PSC joins coastal cleanup in celeb of Ocean Month in Apo Island

DAUIN, Negros Oriental, May 19 (PIA) -- The Provincial Statistics Committee (PSC) has participated in the coastal cleanup in celebration of the Month of the Ocean at Apo Island in Dauin town.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) here led the cleanup with a briefing on the importance of sustainable practices in waste management and protect aquatic resources.

The PSC commits to support the activity to continuously protect Apo Island, one of the top diving sites in the world, from environmental threats on the island’s marine biodiversity resources.

This year's theme, "Sustainably Feed the Global Population," emphasizes the critical need for action to promote responsible management and conservation of the ocean's resources through the implementation of sustainable fishing and aquaculture practices and the protection of critical habitats.

Marvin Bangaysiso, assistant protected area superintendent (APASu), of Apo Island has sought the cooperation and support from the community and visitors or stakeholders to sustain the rich biodiversity in Apo Island Protected Landscape and Seascape (AIPLS) and promote responsible ecotourism.

Bangaysiso said that Apo Island has better practices in protecting its marine resources through regular cleanups, practice proper waste disposal thru single-use of plastic materials, drive on the protection of sea turtles among others from members of the Apo Island Women’s Association, Apo Island Scuba Equipment Rental and Guiding Association (AISERGA), Apo Island Environmental Stewards Association, and various government agencies.

DENR has been conducting information, education and communication campaigns to increase awareness and generate commitments that are intended to save threatened species from extinction.

Residents are also employed as fish wardens, protected area rangers, utility staff and others.

Annually, the DENR also provides eco-tourism trainings such as food handling to community-organizations to enhance the skills of the residents and opportunities for their livelihood which is relevant to continue the cycle of sustainability.

Eco-tourism livelihood sources include dive guides, snorkeling with the turtle guides, souvenirs, and food services, among others.

PSC participating agencies in the Month of the Ocean celebration include the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), Philippine Information Agency (PIA), Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), Provincial Planning Development Office, Provincial Tourism Unit, Provincial Social Welfare & Development Office (PSWDO), Negros Oriental Provincial Police Office (NOPPO), among others. POPCOM7 strengthens KATROPA implementation in CV LGUs

EMB 7 creates composite team for water sampling

The Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) 7 of the Department of Environment Natural Resources Central Visayas on Tuesday, Dec. 28, has created a composite team for water sampling in the different parts of the region affected by Typhoon "Odette" (International name: Rai). The EMB 7 deployed two teams conducting ambient water sampling in the Northern Cebu (Liloan area, Consolacion, Mandaue and Mactan Coastal Area) and Southern Cebu (Cebu Port Area, Talisay, Naga and San Fernando). The bureau said the first two samples from Punta Engaño near Movenpick Hotel Mactan Island Cebu and Umapad, Mandaue City near the bridge and Petron) taken last Dec. 23 and 24 were brought to Ostrea Laboratory since the EMB laboratory cannot analyze due to no electricity. Dumaguete crime rate drops

DUMAGUETE CITY, Negros Oriental, Nov. 10 (PIA) -- The Dumaguete City Police Station has reported that between October 1 to Nov. 7, only 70 crime incidents were recorded, a decrease by 21% compared to 91 incidents in the same period of last year. In a City Peace and Order Council meeting, Lt. Col. Ronoel Fungo disclosed that no homicide, murder, robbery, carnapping, rape and rape with homicide cases were reported in the same period. The City Health Office also reported that of the total 905 surrenderees or people who use drugs (PWUDs) in 2017, around 334 or 37% have completed their assessment as of Nov. 7, 2023. With the absence of drug dependents and pushers in Poblacion 4, 5, and 7, these are considered drug-free barangays, while Poblacion 6 was declared drug-cleared.
