Land Transportation Office (LTO) Region 7 will help motorcycle taxi drivers, locally known as habal-habal drivers, in addressing their issue on registration and licensing.
This is to help the drivers integrate their services on the government-recognized ride-hailing and delivery platforms.
LTO-7 Regional Director Victor Emmanuel Caindec had the chance to talk to the community leaders of the different habal-habal organizations in Cebu City.
Around 30 community leaders attended the said meeting held at the LTO-7 Malasakit Service Center in N. Bacalso Avenue, Cebu City on Oct. 2.
Caindec promised to help all the community leaders in the city, including its members, in getting their driver's licenses and register their motorcycle units.
The director also wanted to help the habal-habal drivers in the city apply in the existing and government-recognized ride-hailing and delivery platforms to help with their daily income.
"We have a solution to the existing problems of our habal-habal drivers in the city and that is to help them get their license and register their motorcycle units," said Caindec.
He added that these motorcycle taxis have become a major transportation factor in Cebu due to the traffic in the Metro.
"An initial meeting was conducted in our office and we thank these community leaders for their support also to our agency, we vow to help them before the year ends," added the director.
A road safety education campaign was also done to inform the community leaders and their members on the dos and don'ts of a driver on the road.
Also present during the meeting were LTO-7 Acting Chief Operations Division Fernando Bustillos and LTO-7 Road Safety Focal Cianza Pearl Gutierrez.
Caindec revealed that in the last 10 years, new motorcycles initially registered to over 1.2 million in Central Visayas.
"Our public transport predicament has given rise to a demand for personal mobility. Consequently, over 68% of registered motor vehicles in the region are motorcycles," said Caindec.
LTO-7 has always been a partner of the motorcycle riding community.
In 2019, the first LTO-7 motorcycle unity ride was conducted where over 1,500 motorcycle riders from the different motorcycle clubs and groups joined.
On Dec. 13, 2020, LTO-7 also conducted the Malasakit Pamasko program, an early Christmas gift-giving activity of the agency, where motorcycle riders were surprised with gifts in the Transcentral Highway, Cebu, still in line with the agency's road safety advocacy. (PR)
